Fat Freezing

WHAT IS FAT FREEZING?

Cryolipolysis (fat freezing), is a nonsurgical fat reduction procedure that uses cold temperature to reduce fat deposits in certain areas of the body, the cold temperature will break down fat cells on the treatment areas. It is not intended for people with obesity.

WHAT AREAS ARE SUITABLE FOR CRYOLIPOLYSIS?

The commonly treated areas are:

Upper arms

Upper / lower abdomen

 Hip (love handles)

 Inner / outer thighs

 Upper / lower back.

THE BASCIS OF BODY FAT

Let’s start with the basics. Not all fat is created equal. We have two distinct types of fat in our bodies: subcutaneous fat (the kind that may roll over the waistband of your pants) and visceral fat (the stuff that lines your organs and is associated with diabetes and heart disease). From here on out, when we refer to fat, we are talking about subcutaneous fat, as this is the type of fat that cryolipolysis targets. A recent study showed that the body’s ability to remove subcutaneous fat decreases with age, which means we are fighting an uphill battle with each birthday we celebrate.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR FAT FREEZING?

Cryolipolysis appears to be a safe and effective treatment for fat loss without the downtime of liposuction or surgery. But it is important to note that cryolipolysis is intended for fat loss, not weight loss. The ideal candidate is already close to their ideal body weight, but has stubborn, pinchable areas of fat that are difficult to get rid of with diet and exercise alone. Cryolipolysis also doesn’t target visceral fat, so it won’t improve your overall health. But it may help you fit into your favorite pair of skinny jeans.

NOT SUITABLE CANDIDATE FOR CRYOLIPOLYSIS:

Not suitable for people who are obese or significantly overweight.

Not suitable to perform on areas of skin infection or injured, or contain severe dermatitis, or inflammatory skin diseases.

Not suitable for pregnancy or breast –feeding

Not suitable for Raynaud’s phenomenon, Cryoglobulinemia, Paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, Cold urticaria

Cold agglutinin disease

 HOW DOES FAT FREEZING WORK?

Cryolipolysis uses the scientific principle that fat cells are more sensitive to temperature than your skin cells, which means that the surrounding tissue will be left unscathed and will not be damaged by the intense temperature.

The onset of the cell death process is called “apoptosis”. By destroying your fat cells with cold temperature, this destruction then triggers the fat cells to release energy in the form of heat – or in other words, burns calories. Does it hurt? Is there any downtime? No, they are painless. You will only feel slight tugging of the applicators on the targeted areas of your body, a cooling sensation as the Cooltech works on your fat cells, and slight numbness and redness from the suction after the treatment.

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS OF CRYOLIPOLYSIS:

Redness of the treated area

Swelling of the treated area

Skin discoloration or bruising

Skin sensitivity or numbness

All the side effects are temporary; they may persist for a few days or weeks.

HOW MANY SESSIONS OF CRYOLIPOLYSIS IS RECOMMENDED?

You may need multiple sessions to achieve the desired goal for a specific area. Normally recommend to repeat every 6-8 weeks; 3-6 sessions for the same area. Some people may need more sessions. Since cryolipolysis involves a gradual process of removing fat cells, optimal results can take between 3 to 6 months to become visible.

HOW IS CRYOLIPOLYSIS PERFORMED?

The size and shape of the fatty deposit is assessed. A handled device is used to freeze the layer of fat cells underneath the skin. First, a pad is applied to the area to protect the skin. Second, the treated area fatty bulge is suctioned or vacuumed into the handle’s hallow opening. You will feel a tugging or pulling sensation as suction is applied. The other possible sensations such as tingling, stinging, aching, cramping with intense cold lessen after five to ten minutes as the area becomes numb during the cooling down process. It takes up to 45mins to 1 hour to treat an area. After the area is treated, the handle is removed.

BENEFITS OF CRYOLIPOLYSIS:

Fat freezing has been proven to be an effective treatment on individuals with smaller pockets of stubborn, hard-to-shed fat, with the following added benefits:

  • No anaesthesia required and no risk of bleeding
  • Can be performed at your local medi-spa
  • Ability to resume work immediately without having to take time off
  • Visible results within 3 to 12 weeks
  • Lasting effects as long as you maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen
  • Proven effectiveness of between 10% to 25% fat reduction from each session
  • Backed by science and patented technology

HOW IS CRYOLIPOLYSIS PERFORMED?

DOES FAT FREEZING REALLY WORK?

2009 study on the clinical efficacy of noninvasive cryolipolysis published in the National Library of Medicine reported findings that cryolipolysis effectively reduced the treated fat layer by 20.4% at 2 months and 25.5% at 6 months after treatment.

Within several weeks of treatment, the frozen, dead fat cells were excreted out of the body through the liver, revealing the full effects of the fat loss within three months.

So, the answer to the question “Does fat freezing really work?” is yes, fat freezing works, but with the caveat that it only works on subcutaneous fat.

Let’s be clear: fat freezing doesn’t help with weight loss. It’s specifically a targeted fat loss treatment that only works on subcutaneous fat.

HOW ARE FAT CELLS DESTROYED?

Fat cells are more susceptible to damage from cold temperatures than skin cells. The cold temperature injures the fat cells which triggers an inflammatory response by the body and the results in the death of the fat cells.

HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS OF FAT FREEZING LAST?

The results from fat freezing treatments may last indefinitely. Accompanied with the right nutrition and physical exercise, the results are also long-lasting.

*Results may vary with each individual*
