What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that are injected under the skin to restore lost volume, soften wrinkles, smooth lines and enhance facial contours. It is a type of nonsurgical cosmetic procedure that is commonly used nowadays for facial rejuvenation.

Treatment with dermal fillers can smooth out facial folds and wrinkles, add volume to the lips, and contour facial features that have lost their volume and fullness due to aging, sun exposure, illness, etc.  Facial rejuvenation can be carried out with minimal complications.  These dermal fillers are injected under the skin with a very fine needle.  This produces natural appearing volume under wrinkles and folds which are lifted up and smoothed out.  The results can often be seen immediately.

How Dermal Fillers Work

The most commonly used dermal fillers are hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that is already in our bodies, which holds onto moisture and keeps tissues and joints lubricated. It helps with soft tissue growth, keeps the skin moisturized, boosts elasticity, prompts the body to make more collagen and elastin, and reduce scarring.  Dermal filler treatment involves a gel-like substance (natural or synthetic) being injected into target areas of the face with a cannula or needle. The filler plumps the skin from the inside out and works in place of lost fat and proteins to smooth lines and wrinkles and volumise hollow areasBy boosting the skin’s supply of hyaluronic acid they revitalise, add volume that has been lost due to ageing, and instantly diminish the appearance of lines and wrinkles. The result is softer and natural look. Fillers are a soft injectable gel consisting of non-animal hyaluronic acid. The gel is tissue-friendly and closely resembles the hyaluronic acid that exists naturally in the body.

The following risks may occur, but there may be unforeseen risks and risks that are not included on this list.  Some of these risks, if they occur, may necessitate hospitalization, and/or extended outpatient therapy to permit adequate treatment. It has been explained to me that there are certain inherent and potential risks and side effects in any invasive procedure and in this specific instance such risks include but are not limited to:  1) Post treatment discomfort, swelling, redness, bruising, and discoloration; 2) Post treatment infection associated with any transcutaneous injection;  3) Allergic reaction; 4) Reactivation of herpes (cold sores); 5) Lumpiness, visible yellow or white patches; 6) Granuloma formation; 7) Localized necrosis and/or sloughing, with scab and/or without scab if blood vessel occlusion occurs.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR FILLER TO WORK?

After filler injection, some people notice the effects straight away, however, filler can take several weeks to soften and settle into the skin.  Some people won’t see the ultimate results of their treatment immediately. Although individual results will vary, many people achieve the full effect within two weeks after receiving their injections.

HOW LONG DOES DERMAL FILLER LAST?

Just like any other skincare procedure, individual results will vary. Some dermal filler can last for 6 to 12 months, while other dermal fillers can last up to 24 months.

DOES DERMAL FILLER HURT?

Dermal filler injection is a little bit uncomfortable; however we have several techniques to make it as painless as possible. First, we can apply topical numbing cream on the injection area for around 15 minutes until the area is numb. Second, we can apply ice pack on the injection area for a few seconds before. Not only does this decrease the pain, but also constricts the blood vessels to decrease bruising.

CAN YOU GET DERMAL FILLER WHILE PREGNANT/ BREASTFEEDING?

There is insufficient date to be certain that dermal filler injection is likely to harm the baby. However there is no guarantee that it is safe to use dermal filler while pregnant or breastfeeding, it is best to be on the safe side and not take the risk.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX AND DERMAL FILLERS?

Botox: This freezes muscles to stop creases and wrinkles caused by facial expressions. These are typically found in the upper face, such as the forehead and around the eyes.

Dermal fillers: These use hyaluronic acid and similar substances to “fill in” or plump areas that have lost volume and smoothness. This includes wrinkles around the mouth, thin lips, and cheeks that have lost fullness. They may also be used on forehead wrinkles, scars, and other areas that need extra volume for a smoother look.

Botox results last 3 to 4 months. Dermal filler results vary, depending on which area is used.

Botox injections mainly help wrinkles caused by muscle movement; dermal fillers mainly help wrinkles caused by volume loss. They offer the similar results to reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles.
